The House approved a bill to reverse President Biden’s pause on certain weapons shipments to Israel, causing a rift among Democrats. The bill, which passed 224-187, is unlikely to progress in the Democratic-controlled Senate. It united House Republicans and divided pro-Israel Democrats from Biden and party leaders.
Biden’s halt on the shipment of 3,500 heavy bombs to Israel, aimed at discouraging a large-scale offensive in Rafah, drew criticism from Republicans and some pro-Israel Democrats. However, only 16 Democrats supported the measure, with most siding with Biden.
The GOP-led resolution was deemed irrelevant by some pro-Israel Democrats after the Biden administration announced a $1 billion arms sale to Israel. Others questioned the constitutionality of the Republicans’ bill, arguing that foreign policy is typically dictated by the executive branch.
The bill is the latest Israel-related measure to pass the House since the conflict began, highlighting divisions within the Democratic Caucus between pro-Israel Democrats and progressives concerned about civilian casualties in Gaza. Republicans intend to use the vote to spotlight these divisions in future attacks on Democrats.
