The House early Friday approved a $832 billion defense funding bill for fiscal year 2026, advancing President Trump’s military priorities just weeks after Republicans passed a separate $150 billion package tied to his broader spending plan. The bill passed 221-209, with five Democrats voting in favor and three Republicans opposed.
The legislation increases funding for active-duty, reserve, and National Guard personnel by $6.6 billion, authorizing a 3.8% pay raise for service members beginning in January. It also allocates $174 billion for procurement and $148 billion for research and testing. Operation and maintenance funding will drop by about $7 billion to $283 billion.
This marks the second appropriations bill the House GOP has passed for 2026, following months of attention on Trump’s megabill, which included $25 billion for his proposed “Golden Dome” missile defense system.
Democrats largely opposed the measure, criticizing provisions that codify Trump’s anti-DEI stance, limit abortion-related travel funding, and block gender-affirming care. Still, Democrats did secure amendments preventing classified data from being transmitted over unsecured networks and barring the military’s use in domestic law enforcement.
