Washington, DC — The Republican-led House Oversight Committee is escalating its long-running Jeffrey Epstein investigation, warning former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton that they could face contempt of Congress if they do not comply with subpoenas for sworn depositions.
Committee Chair James Comer (R-KY) said Friday that both Clintons have delayed testimony for months despite being subpoenaed in August. Bill Clinton is scheduled to appear Wednesday, while Hillary Clinton’s deposition is set for the following day. Comer warned that failure to appear, or to promptly reschedule for early January, would trigger contempt proceedings.
The Clintons were initially expected to testify in October, but their depositions were postponed to December following coordination issues with legal counsel. Comer accused the couple of obstructing the process and said correspondence with their attorney suggests they may be the only subpoenaed individuals refusing to comply. Others named in the investigation include former Attorney General Merrick Garland, former FBI Director James Comey, and former Attorney General William Barr.
The warning came as Democrats on the committee released tens of thousands of photographs obtained from Epstein’s estate. The images include Epstein alongside numerous high-profile figures, including President Donald Trump, Bill Gates, Steve Bannon, and Richard Branson. Democrats said the photos raise new questions about Epstein’s network and pledged continued public releases.
Republicans pushed back, accusing Democrats of selectively releasing images for political effect and reiterating that no evidence has surfaced showing criminal wrongdoing by Trump. Trump, responding to reporters, said he had not reviewed the photos and dismissed their significance.
Epstein died in federal custody in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges. His longtime associate Ghislaine Maxwell is serving a 20-year sentence at a minimum-security federal prison in Texas, with a projected release date in 2037.
