House Republicans failed to pass President Trump‘s signature “One Big, Beautiful Bill” on Friday, after key fiscal conservatives and all Democrats voted against it in the House Budget Committee. The final vote was 16–21, a setback for Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), who had hoped to advance the bill before Memorial Day.

The bill — which includes $1.5 trillion in spending cuts to offset Trump’s 2017 tax cuts — was blocked by GOP Reps. Chip Roy (TX), Ralph Norman (SC), Andrew Clyde (GA), Josh Brecheen (OK), and Lloyd Smucker (PA). Smucker initially supported the bill but switched to “no” to allow the panel to reconsider it later.

The Freedom Caucus said it remains committed to negotiations, citing unresolved concerns over delayed Medicaid work requirements and a lack of clarity on raising the SALT deduction cap.

Despite Trump’s public push for unity, Roy said the bill “falls profoundly short” on deficit reduction and “frontloads spending.”

Democrats celebrated the bill’s failure, calling it a “massive tax giveaway” at the expense of working families.
