House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) claims that the GOP’s internal “chaos” and “dysfunction” have effectively handed Democrats control of the House. He stated in a CBS “60 Minutes” interview, “Even though we’re in the minority, we effectively have been governing as if we were in the majority… Those are just the facts.”
The slim Republican majority is threatened by divisions within the party, with Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) facing criticism from far-right members like Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.). Jeffries asserts that Democrats will defend Johnson against Greene’s motion to vacate the Speaker’s position.
Jeffries has already leveraged this influence to pass a $95 billion foreign aid package, with Johnson voting with Democrats due to resistance within his own party. Greene has cited this as a reason for her motion against Johnson, stating, “We’re not going to have a House majority if we keep Mike Johnson.”
