In a narrow 17-16 late-night vote Sunday, the House Budget Committee advanced the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” a sweeping package aligned with Donald Trump’s priorities. The legislation extends tax cuts, boosts border funding, and initiates reforms to Medicaid and food assistance.

The measure stalled Friday when four conservative Republicans voted against it. On Sunday, Reps. Ralph Norman, Chip Roy, Andrew Clyde, and Josh Brecheen voted “present” to move the bill forward. Roy noted progress in accelerating Medicaid work requirements and reducing green energy subsidies.

Speaker Mike Johnson called it a “big win,” but conservatives remain cautious. Roy said the bill “does not yet meet the moment,” criticizing back-loaded savings and warning of future deficits.

The bill now heads to the House Rules Committee, where moderates are expected to push for adjustments, including raising the SALT deduction cap. Democrats questioned undisclosed side deals made to secure votes, with Rep. Brendan Boyle demanding transparency.
