More than 50 House Democrats are urging President Trump to restore the Citizenship and Assimilation Grant Program, which was terminated in March by the Department of Homeland Security.

In a letter led by Rep. Jimmy Gomez (D-Calif.) and signed by 53 other Democrats, lawmakers demanded that the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) reinstate the program and explain the legal basis for its cancellation.

“This action marks a significant escalation since an abrupt funding freeze was announced just weeks ago,” the letter stated.

The program, created in 2009, provides grants to nonprofit organizations that assist lawful permanent residents in their path to U.S. citizenship, offering civics instruction and application support.

USCIS first froze the program’s funding in February. The lawmakers said grantees were informed on March 27 of its termination, and that the agency has yet to explain why the program was ended or who authorized the decision.

Democrats warned that the cancellation undermines public trust and disrupts essential naturalization services.
