House Democrats are launching a campaign to counter Project 2025, a conservative initiative to expand presidential powers and advance right-wing policies if Donald Trump is reelected. Project 2025, led by the Heritage Foundation, proposes eliminating and overhauling federal agencies and filling them with conservative loyalists.

Rep. Jared Huffman (D-Calif.) is leading the effort, stating, “Americans don’t understand just how far down the road to a dystopic, right-wing theocracy we are right now.” The initiative emerged after the Congressional Progressive Caucus was briefed by liberal advocacy groups like Accountable US, the Center for American Progress, and the Brennan Center for Justice.

Project 2025 aims to dismantle the federal government and replace it with a smaller version managed by right-wing officials. It includes a policy roadmap, a political strategy for implementation, recruitment of conservatives, and training for appointees. The group claims not to promote any specific candidate.

Democrats, alarmed by the project’s scope, view it as a threat to democracy. Huffman plans to focus on its promotion of religious tenets and coordinate with other prominent Democrats through public forums to educate the public. He asserts that their message will prevail as Project 2025’s plans are “deeply unpopular” with most Americans.
