House Democrats have introduced legislation to prevent Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) from accessing sensitive taxpayer financial data. The bill, led by Reps. Sean Casten (D-Ill.) and Haley Stevens (D-Mich.), follows the Trump administration’s decision to grant Musk’s team access to the Treasury Department’s payment system.

Critics, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.), argue the move threatens Americans’ privacy, questioning why Musk’s team needs access to Social Security numbers, addresses, and bank account details. “What are they doing with it? And why aren’t House Republicans stopping them?” Jeffries asked.

Musk claims the access is necessary to combat waste and fraud in government payments. The new legislation would restrict such access to individuals with specific qualifications and security clearances, which Democrats say Musk and his team lack.

While the bill is unlikely to pass in the GOP-controlled House, Democrats hope to expose Republican divisions. The Congressional Progressive Caucus is also pressuring lawmakers to take action, threatening to withhold support for critical budget bills unless Musk is removed.

Meanwhile, Democratic attorneys general in multiple states plan to sue to block DOGE’s access, calling it unconstitutional. A federal judge has temporarily limited Musk’s team to “read-only” access.
