Four House Democrats traveled to El Salvador this week to advocate for Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Maryland resident mistakenly deported despite a 2019 immigration judge’s ruling protecting him from removal. The trip follows a Supreme Court order requiring the Trump administration to “facilitate” Abrego Garcia’s return—an order Democrats say has been ignored.
Reps. Robert Garcia, Maxwell Frost, Yassamin Ansari, and Maxine Dexter met with U.S. Ambassador William Duncan but were denied access to Abrego Garcia and left without assurances of compliance. “We left that meeting with absolutely zero indication that this administration … wants to facilitate the return,” Frost said.
President Nayib Bukele has refused to return Abrego Garcia, labeling him a “terrorist,” while Sen. Chris Van Hollen previously met with him after pushing past Salvadoran military barriers.
Rep. Ansari said the group sent a letter to Secretary of State Marco Rubio demanding daily proof of life and access to legal counsel for Abrego Garcia, whose family remains deeply concerned for his safety.
