Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said Tuesday the southern border wall will be painted black to make it hotter in the sun and more difficult to climb. She credited President Trump with the idea.
Speaking in New Mexico while helping paint a section of the wall, Noem said: “That is specifically at the request of the president, who understands that in the hot temperatures down here when something is painted black it gets even warmer and it will make it even harder for people to climb.”
U.S. Border Patrol Chief Mike Banks added the black paint could also help prevent rust.
Trump made wall construction central to his first-term immigration policy. In his second term, large-scale deportations have taken precedence, but Congress approved about $46 billion this summer to complete the barrier. Noem said construction continues at a pace of roughly half a mile of wall per day.
She noted the barrier varies by geography, including “water-borne infrastructure” along the Rio Grande. The administration’s wall push comes as illegal border crossings have dropped significantly.
