Intuitive Machines achieved a historic milestone with the successful landing of its Odysseus lunar lander on the moon, marking the first private spacecraft landing on the lunar surface and the first U.S. moon landing since 1972. The Houston-based company’s CEO, Stephen Altemus, confirmed the landing and the start of transmissions from the moon, celebrating the event as a significant achievement. Despite facing challenges and a delayed landing time, the uncrewed Odysseus lander, after launching from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, successfully guided itself to the moon’s South Pole.

The mission carries forward a dream of science, innovation, and American leadership in space, as articulated by NASA Administrator Bill Nelson. Odysseus is equipped with NASA’s scientific instruments and experiments, aiming to pave the way for future lunar exploration and a sustainable presence on the moon. This venture into lunar exploration by a private company follows Japan’s recent achievement, making it the fifth country to land on the moon.

The event was celebrated with cheers in the NASA control room, and NASA highlighted the importance of the mission for future Artemis missions, aiming to establish a sustainable human presence on the moon and prepare for eventual missions to Mars. The first crewed mission to the moon under the Artemis program is expected in September 2025, signifying the beginning of a new era in space exploration.
