Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on Tuesday ordered a fresh investigation into the 2021 U.S. military withdrawal from Afghanistan, including the suicide bombing at Kabul’s Abbey Gate that killed 13 American troops and 170 Afghans. The move, directed by President Trump, adds another layer of scrutiny to an operation that has already been the subject of multiple military and congressional reviews.
Calling the withdrawal “disastrous and embarrassing,” Hegseth said the new probe aims to uncover the truth by re-interviewing witnesses and reassessing the chain of command. Prior reviews concluded that the bombing was not preventable and cited poor planning across multiple agencies, including the Pentagon and State Department.
Critics have also pointed to Trump’s 2020 deal with the Taliban, which reduced troop levels ahead of the Biden administration’s final exit. Both administrations supported ending the war.
The new review will be led by Sean Parnell, assistant to the secretary of defense for public affairs. No timeline or deadline has been set for the report.
