Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth reportedly had the encrypted messaging app Signal installed on a desktop computer in his Pentagon office, raising further questions about his communications practices, multiple outlets reported Thursday.

According to The Washington Post, Hegseth and aides discussed ways to bypass cellphone restrictions in classified areas by “cloning” the Signal app from his personal phone onto a computer. Signal is typically blocked in secure areas of the Pentagon, where personal electronics are prohibited.

Three sources said Hegseth had the setup to facilitate faster communication with the White House and other senior Trump administration officials. The New York Times also reported that cables were installed in March to enable Signal use from his office, a capability shared by his confidential assistant and military aide Col. Ricky Buria.

Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell denied the claims, stating, “The Secretary has never used and does not currently use Signal on his government computer.”

The controversy comes after Hegseth was found to have shared sensitive military plans via Signal in March, prompting a Defense Department inspector general investigation. The scandal has fueled internal tensions at the Pentagon, with multiple staff dismissals and mounting calls for Hegseth’s resignation.
