Vice President Kamala Harris has nearly twice the support of former President Donald Trump among voters aged 18-29, according to a Harvard Institute of Politics survey. The poll, conducted from September 4 to September 18, shows growing enthusiasm for Harris, with a 15-point lead in voter excitement over Trump.
Anil Cacodcar of the Harvard Public Opinion Project noted that Harris has generated strong appeal through her personal outreach, policies, and social media presence. The poll found that almost three in four Democrats under 30 plan to vote, compared to three in five younger Republicans, widening the gap from the spring survey.
Harris’s team has actively targeted young voters, committing to visit 150 college campuses and using social media platforms to engage Gen Z and millennials. This contrasts with the Biden campaign, which struggled to excite younger voters, particularly over issues like the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
The poll also reveals shifts in key demographics. Harris enjoys a significant 30-point gender gap in her favor and has seen increased support from both Black and White voters compared to Biden’s spring performance. Polling director John Della Volpe emphasized that this enthusiasm among young voters could be crucial in the 2024 election.
