Vice President Kamala Harris swore in new senators Friday, marking the start of the 119th Congress and a new Republican Senate majority (53-47) after four GOP seat flips in the November elections. Harris administered the oath to new members, including Jim Banks (R-IN), Tim Sheehy (R-MT), Bernie Moreno (R-OH), and Ruben Gallego (D-AZ), among others.
Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA), 91, was sworn in as Senate president pro tempore, while Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) called for unity in fulfilling constitutional responsibilities. Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) warned of challenges with Republican control in Washington.
Harris’s role concludes with certifying the 2024 presidential results on January 6 before President-elect Trump and Vice President-elect J.D. Vance are sworn in. After leaving office, Harris is speculated to be a contender for California governor in 2026.
