Vice President Kamala Harris announced endorsements from mayors of border towns in Arizona on Monday, countering Republican criticism of her handling of illegal border crossings. Endorsements came from the mayors of Bisbee, Nogales, Somerton, and San Luis, along with Yuma County Supervisors Martin Porchas and Tony Reyes.
As Harris embarks on her campaign as the Democratic presidential nominee, she aims to address border security concerns. Republicans argue she failed as Biden’s “border czar” to curb illegal immigration. Last week, the House, including some vulnerable Democrats, rebuked her over border policies.
The endorsements, part of Harris’s Arizona supporter slate, are crucial in the only swing state sharing a border with Mexico. Somerton Mayor Gerardo Anaya stated, “I trust her to meet the needs of border cities and towns without taking advantage of us for her own political gain, like her opponent.”
Harris was responsible for diplomatic efforts to address migration issues in Northern Triangle countries and enforce border control. While Biden’s administration has introduced measures to manage new arrivals and offer new immigration pathways, border arrests have decreased since last December.
