The New York Times reports that Vice President Kamala Harris and the Democratic National Committee reached a private deal after her 2024 election loss to cover tens of millions in campaign debt.
Under the agreement, the DNC paid Harris’s outstanding 2024 bills so she could avoid ending her campaign in debt. In return, Harris agreed to raise money to reimburse the party. Federal records show the DNC has so far covered $20.5 million in expenses.
Small donors were not told about the arrangement. Nearly 100 fundraising emails sent from Harris’s team this year on behalf of the DNC did not disclose that contributions were being used to pay down old campaign debts. Experts note that convincing donors to cover debts is usually difficult, making the lack of disclosure significant.
While there is no evidence the deal violated campaign finance law, the arrangement helps explain the DNC’s simultaneous struggles with cash flow despite record fundraising during the second Trump administration.
