Vice President Kamala Harris condemned insurance practices and misinformation following the devastating Los Angeles wildfires that claimed 25 lives and destroyed thousands of homes. Speaking at the National Action Network’s annual Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast, Harris criticized insurers for canceling coverage in high-risk areas, making homeownership more challenging, particularly for young buyers.
Companies like State Farm have declined to renew policies in disaster-prone regions, citing high costs. Harris noted that climate change, which disproportionately impacts Black and other minority communities, exacerbates these crises. Many affected families, she said, have lost intergenerational homes built over decades.
Harris also decried misinformation about FEMA’s disaster response, including claims amplified by President-elect Trump during his campaign. She urged continued advocacy for vulnerable communities, invoking Dr. King’s legacy of fighting for justice and human dignity.
