Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign called for a second debate with former President Donald Trump immediately after their first debate in Philadelphia. Harris campaign chair Jen O’Malley Dillon stated, “The American people got to see the choice between moving forward with Kamala Harris or going backwards with Trump… They should see a second debate in October.”
Trump responded by suggesting that Harris’s call for another debate indicated her loss. “She wants a second debate because she lost tonight… we’ll think about that,” he remarked.
This debate, hosted by ABC, marked their first direct face-off. Harris’s team declared her the winner, with O’Malley Dillon saying she “commanded the stage” and labeled Trump as “totally incoherent.”
Trump had previously criticized ABC’s handling of the debate but ultimately participated. The Harris campaign had initially opposed the rule to mute microphones but agreed to it to ensure the debate occurred.
