Vice President Kamala Harris accused Florida Governor Ron DeSantis of “playing political games” for reportedly not taking her calls regarding hurricane relief. Harris stated, “Playing political games… in these crisis situations… is utterly irresponsible.” NBC News reported that DeSantis ignored Harris’ calls about storm recovery after Hurricane Helene hit Florida, though DeSantis claimed he was unaware of her attempts to contact him.
The dispute follows President Biden’s visit to Florida last week to survey Hurricane Helene’s damage, which DeSantis did not attend. This is the second time DeSantis has skipped a presidential visit after a hurricane, having done the same during Hurricane Idalia last year. White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Biden reached out, but DeSantis chose not to attend.
Hurricane Helene recently hit Florida’s Big Bend, causing widespread flooding and damage. As the state prepares for another storm, Hurricane Milton, now a Category 5, officials are urging Floridians to follow evacuation orders.
