Vice President Kamala Harris has expressed support for changing Senate procedures to pass federal abortion protections, specifically advocating for the elimination of the 60-vote filibuster rule. In an interview with Wisconsin Public Radio, Harris emphasized the need to lower the threshold to 51 votes to codify the protections from Roe v. Wade into law.
“I think we should eliminate the filibuster for Roe,” Harris stated, underscoring the importance of safeguarding reproductive rights and ensuring individuals have autonomy over their own bodies. This marks the first time Harris, as a presidential candidate, has directly supported a filibuster exception for abortion rights.
President Joe Biden has previously voiced similar support, with both advocating for filibuster reform to protect reproductive and voting rights. However, Democrats face significant challenges in maintaining Senate control in the upcoming November elections.
