Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) was reelected as House Democratic leader following a challenging 2024 election, where Republicans retained the House, flipped the Senate, and reclaimed the White House. Despite setbacks, Democrats celebrated key wins in battleground districts and narrowing the GOP majority.

Jeffries, who would have become the first Black House Speaker if Democrats gained the majority, emphasized the need for better messaging to attract swing and independent voters. Former Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), still influential, has faced criticism for her role in the party’s strategy, including urging President Biden to step aside for Vice President Kamala Harris, who lost to President-elect Donald Trump. Pelosi has filed for reelection in 2026.

Democratic Caucus Chairman Pete Aguilar (D-CA) also retained his leadership role.
