Edgar Welch, known for opening fire in a Washington, D.C., pizza shop in 2016 over the debunked “Pizzagate” conspiracy, was fatally shot by police in Kannapolis, North Carolina, on January 4. Officers attempted to arrest Welch, 36, for a felony probation violation during a traffic stop. Authorities state he pointed a handgun at officers, who shot him after he refused to drop the weapon. Welch died in the hospital two days later.

In 2016, Welch entered Comet Ping Pong with firearms, claiming to “self-investigate” the conspiracy theory linking the restaurant to a satanic pedophile ring. No one was harmed, but Welch served four years in prison.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is reviewing the incident. Officers involved are on administrative leave.
