Greenland’s Prime Minister Múte Egede stated Monday that the autonomous island is “not for sale,” following comments from President-elect Donald Trump that acquiring Greenland was a necessity for U.S. national security. “Greenland is ours. We are not for sale and will never be for sale,” Egede said, emphasizing the island’s long fight for freedom.
Greenland, an autonomous country within the Kingdom of Denmark, has been a topic of interest for Trump before. In 2019, he called buying the territory “strategically interesting,” prompting Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen to dismiss the idea as “absurd.”
Trump also stirred controversy this weekend by suggesting the U.S. reclaim the Panama Canal, expressing frustration over usage fees. Panamanian President José Raúl Mulino responded firmly, stating that the canal “belongs to Panama” and its sovereignty is “non-negotiable.”
