President Donald Trump told Congress on Tuesday that the U.S. supports Greenland’s right to self-determination and that its people are welcome to join the United States. He also stated, “We need Greenland for international security… and I think we’re going to get it. One way or another, we’re going to get it.”
Trump has long pushed for the U.S. to acquire mineral-rich Greenland, a self-governing Danish territory, citing its strategic importance amid rising Arctic tensions with Russia and China. Despite repeated rejections from Greenlandic and Danish leaders, Trump maintains Denmark will “come along” on the deal.
Greenland Prime Minister Múte Bourup Egede firmly rejected Trump’s remarks, stating, “Greenland is ours”, and reaffirming that its future will be decided by its people. His response comes ahead of Greenland’s parliamentary elections, where full independence from Denmark has become a major campaign issue.
Denmark’s foreign minister, while downplaying Trump’s comments, stressed that elections must proceed without international interference.
