Greenland’s government is pushing a bill to ban foreign political donations ahead of its upcoming election, citing geopolitical concerns and growing U.S. interest in acquiring the territory. The legislation, expected to pass Tuesday, would prohibit political parties from accepting funds from foreign or anonymous donors.
The bill follows revelations about Elon Musk’s major donations to President Trump’s 2024 campaign and renewed U.S. interest in Greenland. Trump has long advocated for U.S. ownership of the resource-rich island, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio recently stating it is in America’s “national interest.”
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen reaffirmed that Greenland is “not for sale” but acknowledged shared security concerns with the U.S. over Russia and China’s Arctic presence. She suggested cooperation could be possible if focused on regional security rather than territorial control.
