Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) is calling on Donald Trump to pardon former Rep. George Santos, who is serving a seven-year sentence for wire fraud and identity theft. In a letter to the Department of Justice, Greene claimed Santos’ punishment exceeds that of other members of Congress who’ve committed “far worse offenses.”
“I worked with Mr. Santos … and can attest to his willingness and dedication,” Greene wrote. She added that he is “remorseful” and “accepted responsibility,” though did not address the multiple falsehoods Santos told about his personal and professional background.
Santos pleaded guilty earlier this year to charges stemming from a scheme to falsify campaign finance records, a move that helped secure Republican support for his 2022 election. He was expelled from Congress in 2023 following a House Ethics Committee investigation.
Trump has not ruled out clemency, noting Santos was a “100% for Trump” vote. “He lied like hell,” Trump said last week, “but his vote was solid.”
The case adds to a pattern of Trump weighing pardons for convicted allies who show MAGA loyalty.
