Fabian Schmidt, a U.S. green card holder, was reportedly detained, stripped, and interrogated by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) upon his return to the U.S. from Luxembourg last Friday, his mother told Boston public radio station WGBH.
Schmidt, a New Hampshire resident and electrical engineer, has held a green card since 2008. His family said his card was flagged during reentry at Logan Airport in Massachusetts. He was then transferred to ICE’s Donald W. Wyatt detention facility in Rhode Island.
His mother, Astrid Senior, claims he was stripped naked, placed in a cold shower, and denied water before collapsing. ICE has not confirmed details but directed inquiries to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), which cited privacy regulations.
Schmidt’s record includes a dismissed marijuana charge and a decade-old DUI. His family says he has no ongoing legal issues. Meanwhile, ICE also detained Columbia University student Mahmoud Khalil, a green card holder accused of supporting Hamas, a U.S.-designated terrorist organization.
Schmidt’s family is seeking his release with help from the German consulate.
