President Donald Trump and Elon Musk are pushing to eliminate fraud in the federal government, citing a Government Accountability Office (GAO) report. However, no clear evidence of widespread fraud has been provided. Instead, the administration has focused on cutting diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs and other expenditures that do not align with its priorities.
GAO Director Rebecca Shea, a co-author of the report, estimates fraud accounts for 3% to 7% of federal spending but stresses that proving fraud requires legal action. She suggested artificial intelligence (AI) could help detect fraud, but warned that criminals already use AI to exploit government programs.
Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is developing an AI chatbot, “GSAi,” to cut spending, according to WIRED. Musk has framed the initiative as a battle against bureaucracy, calling for a “second American revolution.”
Shea confirmed that U.S. Comptroller General Gene Dodaro has contacted the Trump administration, but she has not worked with Musk or DOGE.
