In his State of the State address, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis pledged to welcome Jewish students facing antisemitism on college campuses. Criticizing the failure of institutions to address this issue, DeSantis highlighted Florida’s efforts to protect Jewish students, contrasting it with the situation in other states. He offered support for those wishing to transfer to Florida universities, including waiving certain requirements and advocating for in-state tuition for those facing financial hardship.
DeSantis, seeking the Republican presidential nomination, reiterated his firm stance against pro-Palestinian student organizations, which he accused of supporting terrorism. His administration has banned such groups from state universities.
The Governor also spoke of Florida’s aid to Israel following Hamas attacks and increasing sanctions against Iran. Additionally, he mentioned Florida’s educational policies, focusing on parental rights and opposing university diversity initiatives. DeSantis praised measures against what he termed as “indoctrination and sexualization” in school curricula, actions seen by some as anti-LGBTQ.
