A new report from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities warns that a Republican proposal could jeopardize SNAP benefits for 11 million Americans. The bill, introduced by Reps. Dusty Johnson, Randy Feenstra, and Warren Davidson, would raise the age for complying with work requirements from 55 to 65 and limit exemptions for parents with children under age 7, down from the current age 18.

The changes could eliminate benefits for 1.4 million adults and threaten access for 4.5 million others, including 4 million children. The report also notes that 500,000 seniors may lose assistance.

The proposal comes as Trump administration tariffs drive up food costs, and CBPP warns that cutting aid now would “worsen food insecurity.”

Johnson defended the plan: “Work is a powerful pathway out of poverty.”

A 2023 CBO estimate found similar changes could save up to $120 billion over 10 years.

Currently, over 42 million people receive monthly SNAP benefits.
