Washington, D.C. — Senate Republicans are signaling strong opposition to any effort by President Donald Trump to seize Greenland by military force, warning such a move would fracture NATO and weaken U.S. strategic interests in Europe.

According to The Hill, multiple GOP senators were alarmed after Trump and senior administration officials refused to soften demands for U.S. control of Greenland during meetings with Danish and Greenlandic diplomats at the White House. Lawmakers fear that even threatening force against Denmark, a NATO ally, would undermine the alliance at a critical moment in Russia’s war against Ukraine.

Sens. Thom Tillis and Lisa Murkowski are traveling to Copenhagen to reassure Danish leaders that Congress would oppose any military action. Tillis said there is “substantial opposition” in Congress to using force against a sovereign NATO member, even if some lawmakers have been reluctant to speak publicly.

Other Republican senators privately described Trump’s proposal as baffling and strategically dangerous. A Reuters/Ipsos poll found only 17 percent of Americans support a U.S. takeover of Greenland, with just 4 percent backing the use of force. Two-thirds of respondents said such efforts would damage relations with European allies.

Sen. Mitch McConnell delivered a blunt Senate floor speech warning that seizing Greenland would “incinerate” allied trust and do lasting damage to Trump’s legacy. Several GOP leaders echoed that Denmark and Greenland have already expressed willingness to expand U.S. military cooperation—without any transfer of sovereignty.
