Sens. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio) and Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) immediately blamed the media and President Joe Biden following former President Donald Trump’s apparent assassination attempt at a Pennsylvania rally. Vance tweeted that the Biden campaign’s portrayal of Trump as an authoritarian fascist directly led to the incident. Rubio echoed the sentiment, criticizing CNN for its initial headline describing Trump as having “fallen” on stage, which was later updated.

Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) and Rep. Mike Collins (R-Ga.) also condemned the media, with Collins baselessly claiming Biden was behind the attack.

The Biden campaign did not immediately respond to Vance’s tweet. Trump was planning to announce his running mate at the Republican National Committee convention in Milwaukee this week.
