Republican Senator Marsha Blackburn has urged for swift retaliatory strikes against Iran following Tehran’s drone and missile attacks on Israel. Blackburn’s call highlights the potential pressure President Biden could face from some Republicans amid concerns of a broader regional conflict.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have described Iran’s direct attack as a severe and dangerous escalation. The IDF stated that their defensive and offensive capabilities are at the highest level of readiness in anticipation of this large-scale attack from Iran.
The National Security Council (NSC) noted that Iran’s attack is likely to unfold over several hours. The strikes were expected after an Israeli strike hit Iran’s embassy compound in Damascus, Syria, earlier this month, killing two senior officers of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
President Biden is being regularly updated about the situation and has returned to the White House to meet with his national security team.
