House Republicans, led by Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) and Oversight Chair James Comer (R-Ky.), have requested information from FBI Director Christopher Wray regarding Alexander Smirnov, an FBI informant recently indicted for allegedly fabricating claims of bribery involving the Biden family. These allegations had previously been considered significant in the Republicans’ impeachment investigation into President Joe Biden. Smirnov, who is charged by DOJ special counsel David Weiss, has been involved in the federal investigation into Hunter Biden, the president’s son, for over a decade.
Jordan and Comer, in their quest for oversight and as part of the impeachment inquiry, have asked the FBI to provide documents by March 15 related to Smirnov’s involvement in criminal cases, his compensation, and his validation as a confidential source. They are particularly interested in any FBI records that may have raised concerns about Smirnov’s reliability or reported any wrongdoing.
This request stems from a 2020 FBI document, made public by Republicans last year, in which Smirnov claimed to have learned about a bribe paid to both Hunter and Joe Biden by Mykola Zlochevsky, owner of Burisma, a Ukrainian energy company. This claim has since been identified as false according to a recent DOJ court filing.
