A new estimate from the Congressional Budget Office reveals that the House GOP Medicaid proposal could result in 10.3 million people losing coverage by 2034, including 7.6 million who would become uninsured. The policy is part of a broader domestic package aligned with President Trump‘s agenda.
The CBO projects $625 billion in savings over 10 years. Major cuts include:
-
$301 billion from work requirements for childless adults (80 hours/month of work, school, or volunteering).
-
$163 billion from reversing Biden-era Medicaid eligibility rules.
-
$87 billion from halting state provider tax schemes.
Coverage losses would ramp up after 2026, with work requirements kicking in by 2028. The GOP plan would also remove 1.4 million undocumented individuals from the program.
Experts argue most Medicaid enrollees already work and say the proposal would mainly impose burdensome paperwork with minimal employment benefits. A prior CBO review of a similar 2023 plan found no increase in work hours among Medicaid recipients.
The Energy and Commerce Committee is now marking up the bill.
