The Senate on Wednesday passed a joint resolution to repeal a Biden-era rule establishing energy conservation standards for household and commercial appliances. The measure, sponsored by freshman Sen. Jon Husted (R-Ohio), passed by a 52–46 vote and now heads to the president’s desk.

The resolution targets the Energy Conservation Program for Appliance Standards, nullifying its certification, labeling, and enforcement requirements. It would affect 20 product categories, including dishwashers, washers, and air conditioners.

Husted framed the repeal as a victory for consumers and manufacturers, saying it will “cut red tape,” lower costs, and restore choice. “It’s important that my first bill to go to the president’s desk eliminates regulations… instead of adding to them,” he told The Hill.

The Biden administration had argued the rules were designed to promote energy efficiency. But Husted countered that the added requirements provided “no additional energy conservation outcomes” and increased compliance costs.

Thursday marks Husted’s 100th day in the Senate after being appointed to succeed Vice President JD Vance.
