The German government is investigating three cases of German citizens with legal documents being denied entry into the United States and detained, raising concerns about a potential shift in U.S. immigration policy under the Trump administration.
A German Embassy spokesperson in Washington confirmed Tuesday that Berlin is in close contact with the U.S. government over the issue.
“We have recently become aware of three cases in which German citizens were unable to enter the USA and were detained for deportation when they entered the country,” said German Foreign Ministry spokesman Sebastian Fischer.
The incidents involve two tourists and a green card holder:
- Fabian Schmidt, a U.S. legal permanent resident, was detained in Boston, strip-searched, and held in ICE custody after collapsing at the airport.
- Jessica Brösche, a tattoo artist, was held at Otay Mesa Detention Center for six weeks before being deported.
- Lucas Sielaff, a tourist, was arrested at the Tijuana border, detained for three weeks, and deported in handcuffs.
Germany is monitoring whether this is part of a broader policy change affecting European travelers.
