Georgia launched one of its largest-ever voter registration purges Thursday, notifying 478,000 voters their registrations are set for cancellation. The process, conducted every two years, targets individuals flagged as inactive and is meant to maintain up-to-date voter rolls ahead of the 2026 election.

Voters identified as inactive are being mailed final warning letters and have 40 days to respond or contact local election officials to preserve their registration. The state’s previous record was the removal of 534,000 registrations in 2017.

Gabriel Sterling, COO of Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger’s office, defended the action, saying it ensures electoral integrity and reflects voters who have moved. “We are extremely sure these people aren’t here,” Sterling told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Critics, including ACLU of Georgia Executive Director Andrea Young, warned the purge could disenfranchise eligible voters. “Voting by ineligible voters is almost nonexistent,” she said. “This purge doesn’t protect our system.”

The state’s updated process was informed by its partnership with the Electronic Registration Information Center (ERIC), which helps states identify cross-state registration and address changes.

The canceled registrations represent roughly 6% of Georgia’s 8.4 million registered voters.
