Georgia Governor Brian Kemp disclosed in a CNN interview that he had cooperated with Special Counsel Jack Smith’s investigation into former President Donald Trump’s attempts to overturn the 2020 presidential election results. Kemp highlighted his adherence to the law and constitution during the interview, which he mentioned occurred “months ago,” though he did not provide specific dates.

The investigation, led by Smith, explores allegations against Trump related to conspiring to reverse his 2020 election defeat and obstructing the electoral vote count leading up to the Capitol riot. Kemp, having previously interacted with Smith’s office, reiterated his commitment to truthfulness in his testimony, echoing his earlier statements to special grand juries.

In addition to Kemp’s federal testimony, he also appeared before a grand jury in Fulton County, led by District Attorney Fani Willis, which subsequently issued charges against Trump and 18 others for their roles in contesting the election outcome. Trump, maintaining his innocence, has entered not guilty pleas to the charges presented by both Smith and Willis.

Kemp’s involvement comes after public knowledge of Trump’s attempt to influence him to convene a special legislative session aimed at overturning Joe Biden’s electoral win in Georgia.
