ABC News anchor George Stephanopoulos clashed with former President Trump’s attorney, Will Scharf, on Sunday over unsubstantiated claims that President Biden influenced the hush money criminal case against Trump in New York.

During an interview on “This Week,” Scharf reiterated Trump’s assertions, calling the trial — which ended with Trump’s conviction on 34 felony counts — “exhibit A” of the “politicization of the legal system.”

“It’s absolutely unprecedented in American history. It’s not the way that our campaigns are supposed to be run. We contest elections at the ballot box, not in the courts in this country,” Scharf said.

Stephanopoulos acknowledged Scharf’s point but emphasized the lack of evidence connecting the federal Department of Justice to the New York state trial. “That is true. But, of course, we’ve never had a former president facing these kinds of charges because of his own activities. The attorney general in Manhattan has nothing to do with the Department of Justice,” Stephanopoulos explained.

As Stephanopoulos attempted to steer the conversation back to the sentencing process, Scharf insisted on the political nature of the prosecution, prompting Stephanopoulos to interrupt. “There’s no evidence here of that. Sir … I’m not going to let you continue to say that. There’s just zero evidence of that,” Stephanopoulos asserted.

Scharf referenced prosecutor Matthew Colangelo’s presence, noting his previous DOJ role, as purported evidence of political interference, before the interview concluded.
