Former GOP Rep. George Santos has announced his decision to run as an independent in New York’s First District, abandoning his effort to secure a Republican nomination. This move comes after Santos criticized what he referred to as an “embarrassing showing” by the Republican-led House, which passed a $1.2 trillion spending bill to prevent a government shutdown.

Santos, who previously represented New York’s Third District, was expelled from Congress in December amidst various federal criminal charges, including wire fraud and money laundering. Despite facing a 23-count superseding indictment and pleading not guilty to all charges, Santos continues his political pursuits.

Before his expulsion, the House Ethics Committee found “substantial evidence” suggesting Santos misused campaign funds and submitted false campaign reports. His campaign to re-enter politics as an independent marks a significant pivot, moving away from the Republican Party and directly challenging GOP Rep. Nick LaLota, who voted for Santos’ expulsion, in the upcoming election.

To qualify for the ballot as an independent, Santos must gather 3,500 petition signatures from district voters by May 28, as per election regulations. This announcement signifies Santos’ persistent effort to maintain a role in New York politics, despite his contentious and controversial past.
