Disgraced former New York Republican congressman George Santos is expected to plead guilty on Monday in a deal with prosecutors regarding charges that he defrauded his 2022 midterm election campaign. The potential plea deal was hinted at on Friday, just ahead of Santos’s federal criminal trial, which was scheduled to begin early next month.

Multiple sources, including donors to Santos’s previous campaign, informed Talking Points Memo (TPM) that the plea agreement would be announced Monday. Santos has faced intense scrutiny since his election victory, which saw him flip a key New York Democratic district in 2022. After it was revealed that much of his résumé was fabricated, he was indicted on 23 charges, including allegations of lying to Congress and misusing campaign funds for personal luxuries.

Despite initial support from Republican leadership, Santos was expelled from Congress in December 2023, less than a year after taking office. Following his exit, he attempted a brief comeback and started a sideline career as a Cameo performer. The plea deal, if confirmed, would align with similar agreements reached by his former campaign fundraiser and treasurer, who both pleaded guilty to federal fraud charges.
