George Santos, the former Republican Congressman from New York who was expelled from the House, has declared his intention to run for Congress again. This announcement comes months after his expulsion and amidst facing over 20 criminal charges related to various allegations, including misleading donors and fraudulent financial activities. Santos aims to challenge Rep. Nick LaLota (R-N.Y.), marking his return to politics during President Biden’s State of the Union address, his first Capitol visit since expulsion.

Santos criticized LaLota as compromising the country’s future for personal political gain, positioning himself as the “real conservative” New York needs. The announcement intensifies the existing rivalry between Santos and LaLota, with Santos previously disparaging LaLota as “arrogant” and “not well-liked” among constituents.

LaLota, unopposed within the Republican party for the upcoming primary, responded by reiterating his role in leading the effort to expel Santos and expressing readiness to defeat him again if necessary. The New York primary election is scheduled for June 25.
