California Governor Gavin Newsom will travel to Washington on Wednesday to join President Joe Biden and Democratic governors for a meeting, following Biden’s contentious debate with former President Donald Trump.
“Governor Newsom will head to White House tomorrow to attend the Governors meeting and to stand with the President,” a spokesperson for Newsom confirmed Tuesday.
This meeting comes as White House aides work to address concerns over Biden’s cognitive abilities after his shaky debate performance. Biden will convene with Democratic governors and congressional leaders Wednesday evening, following a Monday call where two dozen Democratic governors discussed their response to the crisis. Newsom, a staunch Biden supporter, was not on that call but has been actively defending Biden.
Newsom, present in Atlanta last week to support Biden post-debate, acknowledged the president’s lackluster performance but emphasized Biden’s record in office over the debate. Despite intense speculation about a possible presidential run, Newsom continues to support Biden, helping raise several hundred thousand dollars for the Biden campaign and the Democratic National Committee after the debate.
