A new Gallup survey finds U.S. support for capitalism at its lowest point since the organization began tracking the issue 15 years ago. The poll, released Monday, shows 54 percent of Americans view capitalism positively, down six points from 2021.

Support had remained relatively consistent between 2010, when 61 percent expressed a favorable view, and 2021, when 60 percent said the same. The latest results mark the sharpest decline yet, driven largely by shifting opinions among Democrats and independents.

For the first time, fewer than half of Democrats see capitalism positively, with support dropping to 42 percent from 50 percent four years ago. Independents also showed a notable decline, from 59 percent in 2021 to 51 percent in the new survey. By contrast, Republicans’ support has remained stable, rising slightly to 74 percent in 2024.

The survey also measured views of socialism, which 39 percent of Americans rated positively. That included 66 percent of Democrats, 38 percent of independents, and 14 percent of Republicans.

Gallup conducted the poll between August 1–20, interviewing 1,094 adults by telephone. The margin of error is four points.
