A Gallup poll revealed that only 23 percent of Americans identified as Democrats in June, the lowest since records began in 2004. Conversely, 51 percent identified as independents, the highest recorded, while 25 percent identified as Republicans.
This shift reflects growing public dissatisfaction with both major parties and the broader political system. A 2022 Pew Research Center study found that only 16 percent of U.S. adults trusted the federal government, the lowest in nearly 70 years.
The Gallup poll, conducted via telephone with 1,005 U.S. adults from June 3-23, has a margin of error of ±4 percentage points. Alan Abramowitz, a political science professor emeritus at Emory University, noted that many independents still lean toward a major party, suggesting the findings might be less significant than they appear.
The Democratic Party has faced controversy following President Joe Biden’s criticized debate performance against former President Donald Trump on June 27, leading to calls within the party for Biden to step down. With Biden and Trump set for a rematch in the 2024 presidential election, these shifts in party affiliation could impact their performance at the polls.
