A new Gallup poll shows that increasing income taxes on wealthy Americans is the most popular approach to reducing the federal debt, which now exceeds $37 trillion. Sixty-three percent of respondents said they support higher taxes for upper-income earners, while 54 percent favor broader reforms to the federal tax code.

Support for taxing the rich is highest among Democrats (86%), followed by independents (62%) and Republicans (38%). Meanwhile, only 41 percent of Americans back imposing tariffs—a key component of President Donald Trump’s economic policy—with 89 percent of Republicans approving, compared to just 5 percent of Democrats.

Less than half of U.S. adults favor cutting entitlement or social programs. Only 39 percent support changes to Social Security and Medicare, while 49 percent favor reducing costs in Medicaid and food assistance programs.

The findings underscore persistent partisan divides over how to address America’s growing debt burden, with Republicans prioritizing spending cuts and tariffs, while Democrats and independents lean toward tax reform.
