In the upcoming U.S. Senate race for Arizona, Democratic Representative Ruben Gallego has established a significant lead over Republican Kari Lake, according to the latest polls. Arizona, known for its political swings, has seen a shift from its Republican leanings with Democrats making gains in recent elections. The state, which President Joe Biden won in 2020, is anticipated to be a battleground once again.
Gallego and Lake, both prominent figures in their respective parties, are expected to win their primaries on July 30. A CBS News and YouGov poll shows Gallego with 49% support compared to Lake’s 36%, although neither has crossed the 50% threshold. This lead is consistent with other polls, including those by The New York Times and Siena College, and Emerson College, which also show Gallego ahead.
Despite the Senate race numbers, Republicans appear to have the edge in the presidential race, with 52% of respondents favoring Trump over Biden’s 47%. The poll, with a margin of error of ±3.3 percentage points, was conducted among 1,510 Arizona adults from May 10 to 16.
Lake, a Trump-endorsed candidate known for her claims of voter fraud in the 2020 election, narrowly lost the 2022 gubernatorial race. She attributes her defeat to alleged fraud in Maricopa County. Gallego, a former U.S. Marine and a Congressman since 2014, has consistently won re-election by wide margins in his Democratic-leaning district.
The Gallego and Lake campaigns have not commented on the poll results. As the election approaches, these figures highlight the competitive nature of Arizona’s political landscape.
